PORSCHE CARRERA CUP ROUND 6 SANDOWN PREVIEW

By Timothy Neal

Round 6 of the Porsche Carrera cup heads to Sandown with a 31 car grid, with some compelling story lines taking shape in the championship battles.

The intense level of competition at the top has seen five different round winners this season, with the streak standing at seven from last year, dating back to Bathurst in 2021 with David Wall coming out on top.

Should there be a different round winner at Sandown this weekend, it will equal the championship record of eight consecutive different podium sitters; such is the even spread of talent in the Pro class currently.

The driver to watch this round is Sonic Motor Racing’s charger Aaron Love, who dominated The Bend after returning to Australia from racing at Le Castellet in the Mobil 1 Supercup where he finished in P19.

Tim Miles to notch up his 100th Carrera Cup race start

The Sonic Motor Racing team will be banking on their in-form WA racer to record another round win for their home race at Sandown, with Love’s recent form taking him 183 points off the top in sixth position, having achieved 6 podiums from 11 races.

Dylan O’Keeffe’s consistency sees him occupying second in the Pro class, with the Victorian driver just 46 points off leader Harry Jones. Yet to take a round this season, a win would be a just reward for his season as he chases a career best season after finishing third in 2018.

Pro class leader, Jones, has had a dry spell of late, missing out in his last six outings. But the 2019 Sprint Challenge champion holds the fastest qualifying lap record at Sandown, and looks due for a good outing with O’Keeffe and Wall breathing down his neck.

Sam Shahin leads the pack in a tight Pro-Am title fight

In the Pro-am class, just 53 points separate the top five, with only 14 points splitting the top three. Sam Shahin sits atop, with a miserable eight point lead over Dean Cook, with Geoff Emery six points ahead of Cook.

Stephen Grove, who also raced in the Mobil 1 Supercup at Le Castellet (P30) and at the Spa 24 Hour, will be gunning for his first ever pole at Sandown on his round 6 return. Grove has recorded two previous round victories at Sandown in 2017 and 2021, and currently sits in sixth position on the Pro-Am table.

Harry Jones leads the Pro class, but desperately needs to put some points on the board at Sandown

There are also a few milestones of note come the weekend, with David Russell competing in his 50th Porsche Carrera Cup round, and Tim Miles with notch up his 100th race start in Race 2. Russell sits fourth in the Pro class, 117 points off Jones , and Miles occupies seventh in the Pro-Am.

Far from being a shock occurrence, a rainy weekend is forecast for Melbourne, meaning drivers will be allowed two warm up laps to get some sufficient heat into the Michelin’s, although there is a chance for a clear day on Sunday.
