Bob Kovachick is retiring. The veteran meteorologist who has been with WNYT/NewsChannel 13 for more than 30 years made the announcement Friday.

“I don’t know what to say; I don’t know how to say it. I’m leaving Channel 13. I’m retiring,” Kovachick said, his voice breaking, at the end of the station’s Friday afternoon newscast.

Kovachick joins a growing list of on-air staffers who have left WNYT this year. Unlike the others who went on to other jobs, Kovachick says he is done working.

“It’s just time to pull the plug and retire and enjoy the other aspects of my life,” Kovachick said on air. A WNYT announcement about his departure said Kovachick will remain on the weather team as a contributor for special projects.

Several long-tenured journalists have left the NBC affiliate in the last 24 months, including Jim Kambrich, Jerry Gretzinger and Benita Zahn.

Kovachick took a brief leave earlier this year to focus on his health. At the time, faithful viewers were concerned that he had left the station. He returned in July.

Kovachick’s last day on air will be Oct. 3.
