In a tweet, the world’s richest man shared that his father, Time Magazine’s 2021 ‘Person of the Year’, ran out of money in the 1990s. Musk decided to help his father and his extended family in South Africa.
“Errol ran out of money in the 90’s. My brother & I financially supported him & his extended family in South Africa since then on the condition that he not do bad things. Unfortunately, he did do bad things :(,” the 51-year-old -old wrote on Twitter.
While it’s not yet clear what Musk meant by ‘bad things’, the SpaceX boss has previously spoken candidly about his rough relationship with father Errol. In one of the interviews, Musk had even called his father, who is a South African engineer and businessman, a “terrible human being”.

Musk’s revelation about his father’s financial situation in the ’90s comes after a Berkeley professor and former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich, claimed on Twitter that ‘self-made billionaires’ are a myth and Musk came from a family that owned an emerald mine in Apartheid South Africa.
The original tweet also mentioned other billionaires such as Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. “Elon Musk came from a family that owned an emerald mine in Apartheid South Africa. Bill Gates’ mom helped Microsoft get a deal with IBM. Jeff Bezos’ garage-based start was funded by a quarter-million dollar investment from his parents. ‘ Self-made billionaires are a myth,” Reich tweeted alongside a video.
In his first reply on Twitter, Musk wrote: “You both an idiot and a liar.”
On several accounts, Musk and senior Musk have been quizzed about their complicated relationship.
In August this year, Errol had said that he isn’t proud of his son, Elon. The 76-year-old was speaking on the ‘Kyle and Jackie O’s Show’ which plays on Australian radio station KIIS FM.
“No. You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it is not as if we suddenly started doing something,” Errol had said when the talk show host against the businessman if he was proud of the Tesla chief and his son, Elon.
